Mark O’Bannon — San Diego author of Fantasy & Sci-Fi.

Mark O’Bannon is a San Diego-born novelist, screenwriter, and game designer, known for creating immersive worlds in science fiction and fantasy. Inspired by both the stars and his family’s legacy of innovation, O’Bannon blends imagination, adventure, and wonder in every story he tells.

A Legacy of Innovation

O’Bannon is the grandson of aviation pioneer Reuben H. Fleet, founder of Consolidated Aircraft, makers of the legendary B-24 Liberator bombers and PBY Catalina flying boats of World War II. Fleet also played a key role in establishing America’s airmail service and the world’s first international airline, NYRBA.

His uncle, Preston Fleet, brought the IMAX experience to San Diego when he built the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center, home of the first IMAX Dome Theater. Mark credits the opening night film featuring the Voyager spacecraft as the spark that ignited his lifelong love of the stars — a passion that would eventually lead him to science fiction storytelling.

Science Fiction:

Imperium – a sweeping saga of 60 novellas; the first ten are being edited for release in 2026.
Pirates of the Imperium – an Imperial scout captain witnesses genocide and becomes a pirate, waging war against the government.
High Salvage – an interstellar treasure hunt for the galaxy’s greatest prize.
Touching Infinity – a science fiction mystery and love story.

Fantasy:

Shadows & Dreams – beginning with The Dream Crystal, a fairy changeling battles the Shadow People over control of mankind’s dreams. The sequel, The Dark Mirrors of Heaven, is planned for 2026.
Aia the Barbarian – a heroic fantasy adventure set in ancient Spain, 480 B.C.
Whiskers – a forthcoming fantasy novel where dragons long turned into cats awaken again, planned for completion in 2025.

Games and Interactive Storytelling

O’Bannon is also the CEO of Shadowstar Games, publisher of Fantasy Imperium—a pen-and-paper role-playing game of historical fantasy. The game combines deep storytelling with interactive role-playing mechanics, letting players explore rich, immersive worlds of adventure.

Advocacy and Teaching

A passionate advocate for self-publishing, O’Bannon conducts workshops and guides aspiring authors on publishing, marketing, and promoting their work. He believes in empowering writers to take control of their creative vision while building a platform that connects with readers.
